New series to bridge forest science and industry

Research Insights

This new series of concise publications will bridge forest science and industry, translating the latest research findings into practical insights for forest-based businesses, policymakers, and the scientific community. Each issue distills key discussions and evidence on pressing forest challenges, in line with TU4F’s mission to support sustainable forest management and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Research Insights aims to bring scientific evidence into decision-making across the forest sector. Overarching themes of the series include building forest resilience in a changing climate, advancing a sustainable forest bioeconomy, and driving the sector’s sustainable transformation. These themes reflect TU4F’s core focus on climate adaptation, innovation for sustainable wood supply, and the balance between biodiversity conservation and economic viability, all crucial for the future of forests and society.

Each Research Insights issue will be designed to be an accessible, quick read “knowledge nugget” that outlines what’s happening, why it matters for industry, science, and policy, and what can be done. By spotlighting practical recommendations, from adaptive forest management and circular bioeconomy innovations to policy coherence and stakeholder engagement, the series invites all forest stakeholders to turn insight into action.

  • Forests and wood products in Europe’s decarbonization strategy: exploring how Europe’s forests and wood products contribute to climate change mitigation and what is needed to enhance their carbon benefits. This issue examines the risks of forests turning from carbon sinks to sources of carbon emissions and outlines strategies for bolstering climate action.
  • Europe’s wood supply in disruptive times: Climate impacts, fragmented policies, and shifting market conditions require coordinated responses rooted in science, supported by policy, and led by industry. This issue summarizes key findings from the TU4F study ‘Wood Supply in Disruptive Times’ and presents actions and recommendations for stakeholders.
  • Initial discussion on balancing biodiversity and wood production: This issue presents conclusions from a TU4F Think Tank meeting which brought together senior voices from science, industry, and policy to identify solutions that balance biodiversity protection and sustainable wood production. It addresses questions such as how to strengthen forest resilience, reward sustainable practices, and build public trust.
